Opening: The Soveriegn in Georgetown

By:  Claire Goldman

The Neighborhood Restaurant Group has opened a new Belgian beer based bar call The Soveriegn in the heart of Georgetown.  Beer Director Greg Engert has tastefully curated a 350+ beer list for the new restaurant from the group that brought us ChurchKey and Birch&Barley.

The Soveriegn is located down a lantern lit alley near the corner of Wisconsin and M Streets NW (alleyway next to Abercrombie & Fitch).  The dark and hip two story space is very lodge-like with wooden communal high top tables and booths upstairs under reindeer-head laden rustic chandeliers.  There also room for reservations in the first floor dining area.

The drink list includes all Belgian or Belgian style beers, no American lagers or pale ale's in the joint.  There are 50 beers on tap and the rest can be ordered in bottles.  There are also featured cocktails such as The Hunter's Gift made with rye whiskey, sugar, absinthe, peychaud and chocolate bitters.  The wine list (at least on the opening night menu) consists of sparkling, whites and reds all from France.

The Sovereign food menu looks perfect for happy hour with friends or a filling meal.  Beer pairing pleasers such as mussels, cheese, charcuterie and burgers are of course included.  Entree options also include some interesting options such as fried skate wing and, of course, beer-braised short ribs. Also notable are the flame cakes in bacon, Bavarian and mushroom flavors.
